Welcome to this edition of Art, Design & Communication in Higher Education (ADCHE). In this edition we present articles that shine a light on teaching and learning, research and pratice within art history, fine art, architecture and design. The first article in this edition entitled ‘Bibliometric analysis of review on curriculum reform of design history using CNKI database’, offers a fresh anglefor readers of this journal. The authors Sihua Huang, Noor Azizi Mohd Ali, Mohd Sallehuddin Mat Noor and Nazlina Shaari report on a meta-review study that surveys the field of design pedagogy research in China. This article will be vital reading to anyone who is looking for a landscape view of the literature. The authors report that the three key areas of focus for Chinese design pedagogy researchers are design history, industrial design history and design teaching reform. Tatyana Panyok, Zhen Dai and Dongting Ju bring us another valuable Chinese-based study. Their study is entitled ‘Project activities in the professional training of future designers (based on China’s educational experience)’. In this article they present the findings of their research into improving design students’ professional training deploying project activities alongside art and multimedia technologies. The authors look at the role of artfulness and artistic skills in relation to student sucess within design projects. The article reports on the ways that the introduction of digital techologies changes not only the students’ work but also the teaching approaches. This study usefully situates design education within the wider sociocultural environment reminding us that designers influence (as well as respond to) issues of taste and aesthetics in society. The results of the study point to the core learing that design students will need to thrive in the industry namely the confidence to use information and communication technologies and the importance of direct engagement professional design activities. Alysha Friesen Meloche and Toni May bring us ‘Surveying the art history mystery: Student opinions of outcomes and value’. Given the centrality of some form of art history curriculum in many art and design courses globally, it is surprising that there have not been more articles in this journal exploring this topic so this study is a welcome addition. This survey-based research focuses on students’ perceptions of art history. The study explores issues pertaining to curriculum and pedagogy. Whilst students value a lecture-based approach to teaching delivery for this subject they report that they would also value more experiential forms of teaching that would support the development of critical thinking. This study usefully draws out the wider transferrable knowledge and skills that art history students learn. Derya Yorgancıoğlu and Özlem Altınkaya Genel’s study is entitled ‘Reversing the design process in the introductory architectural design studio: The exploratory function of sketch modelling’. This case study research looks at the role of sketch modelling in architecture education. Sketch modelling is an experiential, creative, problem-solving practice and the research points to the ways that sketch modelling helps students to address design challenges through ‘in-the-making’ design. This study shines a light on ways that design educators can build students’ reflective practices through sketch modelling. In ‘Learning environments and the role of feedback in sculpting lessons’ Linda Puppe, Helen Jossberger and Hans Gruber focus on the role of the learning environment. In this interview-based study they asked students about the relationship between the learning environment and students’ learn-ing goals. This study links to the research reported above because it points to the ways that studio-based learning and high-quality feedback (from staff and students) can support students’ artistic development. Both studies underline the importance of giving spaces for students to experiment and problem solve in an iterative and reflective way. Catherine Smith’s article is entitled ‘Noticing, curation, cultivation: Academic development leadership in the arts university’. This article reports on the author’s leadership and curation of a series of teaching exhibitions in a specialist arts university. The author sets out a carefully theorized approach to educational leadership that brings together and intersects feminist leader-ship literature, arts informed leadership literature and literature on academic microcultures. Smith demonstrates the benefits of deploying arts modalities within forms of academic development leadership. Michelle Darlington and Howard Riley remind us that ‘Drawing matters’ (the title of their article). The authors call for recognition of graphic articulacy–what they describe as ‘visualcy’. The authors point to the foundationalimportance of drawing in the visual arts that distinguishes the arts from other disciples. Many commentators are concerned about the move away from a focus on drawing in the school sector and the authors connect this shift to the wider sociopolitical contexts for education in the United Kingdom. This article celebrates the role of drawing in a visual arts curriculum. In ‘The dramatization of practice in design education: (Un)learning by doing through participant observation’, Andrea Gaspar asks us to consider with fresh eyes the phrase ‘learning by doing’. This ethnographic study deploys participant observation to explore the ways design students approach their design practice. Gaspar depicts a ‘dramatization of practice’ as a means of communicating the openness of the research process as an aesthetic effect. 本文原载于Art, Design & Communication in Higher Education(《高等教育中的艺术、设计与传播》)2022年第1期,原标题为“Teaching practices in art and design: Experiment...experiment... and then experiment some more! (University of the Arts in London)的主管学习与促进教学主任,自2013年起担任该职位。 (European League of Institutes of the Arts’ Teachers Academy)的主席。 苏珊·奥尔与艾莉森·施里夫(Alison Shreeve)合著了《高等教育中的艺术与设计教育学:创意课程中的知识、价值观与模糊性》(Art and Design Pedagogy in Higher Education: Knowledge, Values and Ambiguity in the Creative Curriculum),2018年于劳特里奇出版社(Routledge Press)出版。 Journal of Computational Methods in Sciences and Engineering(《科学与工程计算方法期刊》)审稿人,中华美学学会会员。 (Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design)获得了硕士学位,主攻纺织印刷方向。 |
